Marie Claire celebrity news: Danni Minogue and Cheryl Cole

Oh dear, oh dear. We had high hopes for this weekend's X Factor following last week's style hits, but, boy, were we disappointed.

Let's begin at the top, with the judges starting the show as it meant to go on.

The perfect example of how the wrong accessories can completely ruin a look, Cheryl Cole's mini prom dress could have been cute, if she'd only ditched the bling.

From the gold chain necklace to the bauble earrings and spangly headband, just one our of three would have been fine, but all together and she started to resemble a Christmas tree.

Onto Dannii, and after a number of tasteful weeks on the style front, she undid all her hard work by donning a nude leopard-print minidress, embellished with sack loads of glitter. Bring back the maxi dresses, please!

As for the contestants, and it didn’t get much better.

Whoever insists on squeezing Ruth into dramatic ballgowns every week, really needs to get some new inspiration. The strapless shape may suit the starlet, but a more modern look would do wonders for her as well.

As for Rachel, and we know that the wrap dress has become a suit-all staple (thank Trinny and Susannah for that), but is it really performance material? Up against the other girls, her ensemble just looked plain.

Now, throughout X Factor there has always been one contestant who hasn't let us down. Alexandra has proven consistently stylish, but this weekend that all fell apart.

Her 'trendy ensemble' wasn't on a par with previous more classic looks, and much like her mentor Mrs Cole, was just all too much. The metallic shift alone, though shapeless, may have passed the style radar, but teamed with clumpy peep-toe boots, multiple chains and the severest ponytail we've seen since the Eighties, and you have a fashion train-wreck. Better luck next week!

Onto the evening's only redeeming fashion factor, and Diana was a style breath of fresh air in her boho navy printed maxi dress. Full marks!

So it may have been a bad week for the girls, but worst look of the night has to be reserved for little Eoghan Quigg. Was that a shell-suit top we spied? Teamed with dog-tags? Oh dear, oh dear.

Yeah, I agree with most of your comments. But I thought Cheryl and Dannii looked more like two tipsy s***s on a Saturday night out in Manchester! And as for Diana?? What's with that look of the big hair all over the place and the dark eye makeup. Trying to be a blonde Amy Winehouse or what? It just doesn't work Diana!

Hmmm I thought Diana looked like a corpse and Alexandra's hairstyle as the most ridiculous look (aside from Cheryl's disaster) I've seen in a long time.

The x-factor fashion news here is always so negative. I agree that generally the choices certainly aren't fantastic, but its so harsh on the contestants so new to performing on stage.

I thought that the section about the stylist's job on The Xtra Factor was really interesting, how sometimes they totally have to change the outfits on the day of the show. And the fact that the main cues for the look come not from the stylist but from Brian.
