Charlize lands new role for UN

Charlize Theron at the LA premiere of Sleepwalking Rex Features

Oscar-winning actress Charlize Theron has been made a messenger of peace by the United Nations.

The star will have a special focus on ending violence against women.

Charlize won her Oscar for the 2003 film Monster, for her portrayal of real-life serial killer Aileen Wuornos who suffered from violence and abuse.

The 33-year-old actress was honoured for her efforts by UN secretary general Ban Ki-Moon.

He told the actress, ‘You have used your voice, compassion and special relationship with the public to create a better world.’

She will be formally inducted as a peace envoy in New York today.

The South-African born actress, who is now a US citizen, is also the founder of a project aimed at promoting HIV/Aids education for children and their families in South Africa.

She becomes the UN's 10th peace envoy, joining her acting colleagues George Clooney and Michael Douglas, British naturalist Jane Goodall, and Brazilian author Paulo Coelho.
