Sarah Palin ditches expensive wardrobe

Marie Claire News: Sarah Palin

Sarah Palin embraced the casual look this weekend, following the revelation that the Republican National Committee had spent a massive $150,000 on her campaign wardrobe.

Ditching her couture suits and designer handbags, the vice presidential candidate instead wore a pair of blue bootleg jeans, a simple white tee, and a navy fitted jacket for an appearance on Sunday night in Asheville North Carolina.

Fighting back against the criticism, the self-styled hockey mum told a crowd in Florida earlier that day that the jacket she was wearing was her own, and that from now on all clothes she wore would be from her own wardrobe.

Speaking of the high-priced campaign  wardrobe, Mrs Palin explained, 'Those clothes, they are not my property, just like the lighting and the staging and everything else the RNC purchased.'

She added, 'I'm not taking them with me. I'm back to wearing my old clothes from my favourite consignment shop in Anchorage, Alaska.'

Emphasising that she would not usually splash out on expensive designer goods, Palin then talked the crowd through her jewellery.

Pointing to her earrings she said, 'These are from Todd's mom, who is a native American up in Alaska. Native American. Native Alaskan. And my wedding ring.... a $35 wedding ring from Hawaii that I bought myself. I always thought, 'It's not what it's made of. It's what it represents. Twenty years later, happy to wear it.'

Palin faced criticism when it was revealed that the her campaign trail wardrobe, funded by the Republican National Committee had cost a whopping $150,000 and had included a host of designer pieces, such as a Louis Vuitton handbag and couture Valentino suit.

U.S political website, politico.com, revealed the shopping spree after Palin visited Saks Fifth Avenue in New York and St.Louis, spending $49,425 and Neiman Marcus in Minneapolis, where she wracked up a bill of $75,062.

A McCain spokesperson confirmed this weekend that a third of the pieces were returned due to sizing issues, and that other clothing worn would be donated to charity.

What next with Sarah? What is her message in this new appearance - anything substantial in her speech or is it all about how she is back in her old duds from Alaska? At least I can sit back and enjoy the spectacle knowing Obama is winning. At least he speaks of substantial issues and plans for our country for the future. She is a joke and hardly a role model for women as she claims to be. It is actually all very sad in a way.
