Pushy mums produce go-getting girls
Women who have pushy mothers are more likely to be confident and feel in control of their lives, says a new report.
Researchers from the University of London found that pushy mums who had high hopes for their daughters were more likely to produce girls who knew what they wanted out of life by the time they were 30.
The study revealed that a woman’s self-esteem is rooted in the expectations her mother had for her. This held true, even when the daughter’s intelligence and parent’s financial background were taken into account.
However, the same effect was not seen in mothers and sons. The researchers say that women are more likely to push their daughters, rather than their sons, to succeed.
A mother’s confidence and ambition will also influence her daughter’s choices in life.
Despite the link, the study, printed in the New Scientist, found that a mother’s ambition had no effect on her daughter’s earnings.
Celebrity mums accused of pushing their daughters include Britney Spears’s mother – who managed her career after Britney’s big break on the Mickey Mouse club aged 12 – and the mother of Charlotte Church, who oversaw her daughter’s classical singing career.
