Scarlett Johansson visits Rwanda

Marie Claire celebrity news: Scarlett Johansson at the Teen Choice Awards

Scarlett Johansson is today returning from a four-day trip to Rwanda, where she visited AIDS clinics.

The newly-engaged actress, 23, made the journey to the troubled African nation with (RED) the initiative to help fight AIDS in Africa through business and consumer power.

'It was important for me to come here and see the issues we're up against first-hand,' Johansson said in a statement. 'I came here with an open mind, wanting to listen, understand and learn; I leave with the overwhelming understanding that the small action of making a (RED) choice in your purchases...has an enormous impact on the lives of people in countries like Rwanda.'

Politically active Johansson has also recently joined forces with fellow A-lister Eva Mendes to encourage Americans to recycle their old mobile 'phones. The actresses both star in a new campaign film for the Environmental Media Association to show people what to do with their unwanted handsets. The mini-movie, titled The Spirit, was shot by Sin City director Frank Miller.
