Bob Geldof launches online 'peace channel'

Marie Claire Celebrity News: Bob Geldof and Nelson Mandela

The rock star and charity campaigner Bob Geldof launched an online channel devoted to peace and global conflict resolution today.

The Peace Channel, which can be viewed at www.peacechannel.tv, opens the way for ordinary members of the public to report on conflicts around the world.

It will feature video, picture galleries, debate forums and material generated by its users focusing on the world's wars and potential problem areas.

Reports already on the site include a report from Kenya on how last year's upsurge in violence was resolved and an interview with East Timor's president Jose Ramos-Horta.

The channel was switched on at midday today at the Point of Peace Summit in Norway, where Nobel Peace Prize laureates and experts have got together to discuss conflict resolution.

The former Boomtown Rats frontman, who organised fundraising concerts Live Aid and Live 8, said he wants people to send in their video reports to 'cover the world's wars and potential flash points'.

The channel is supported by Geldof's media company, Ten Alps, and the human rights organisation, the Peace Channel Foundation.

Ten Alps chief executive Alex Connock told the Daily Telegraph: 'It has a global reach, strong journalistic purpose and online TV penetration, which is fast taking on the same kind of political power than CBS had in the Vietnam War.'
