Mary-Kate Olsen's lawyer has released a statement saying that the star 'had nothing to do with' Heath Ledger's accidental overdose and does not know where the actor obtained the drugs that tragically killed him.

The statement was released following a report from the Associated Press, confirmed by People magazine, that 22-year-old Olsen wants immunity from prosecution before she will co-operate with a federal investigation into close friend Ledger's death from an accidental overdose.

The statement from Michael C. Miller reads: 'Despite tabloid speculation, Mary-Kate Olsen had nothing whatsoever to do with the drugs found in Heath Ledger's home or his body, and she does not know where he obtained them.

'Regarding the government's investigation, at Ms Olsen's request, we have provided the government with relevant information including facts in the chronology of events surrounding Mr Ledger's death and the fact that Ms Olsen does not know the source of the drugs Mr Ledger consumed.'

Mary-Kate Olsen was the first person to be called after a maid found her number on Ledger's phone upon finding his body in a New York apartment in January.
