Onassis necklace sells for £3.6 million

Marie Claire News: Necklace by Harry Winston

A collection of jewellery that once belonged to Christina Onassis has sold for £15 million at auction, a UK record for this style of sale.

The highest earning lot was a Harry Winston diamond encrusted necklace, which raised almost double its estimate, to sell for £3.6 million. The stunning necklace features a potentially flawless 38 carat diamond.

Put up for sale by Christina's daughter Athina, the auction took place at Christie's yesterday. Athina is the last remaining descendant of Aristotle Onassis, the Greek shipping magnate and was left the jewels in her inheritance; her mother died when she was just three years old.

With a fortune of £1 billion, the sale was clearly not for financial reasons. Instead it is believed that Athina simply had no need for the jewellery, as friends have suggested.

The sale made a total of £15 million from 230 lots, almost doubling its estimate of £8 million.
