Yves St Laurent dies

Marie Claire News: Yves Saint Laurent

The iconic fashion designer Yves St Laurent has died at the age of 71.

The Pierre-Berge-Saint Laurent Foundation announced in the early hours of this morning that Saint Laurent had passed away on Sunday evening in Paris following a long illness.

Already his peers, politicians and the fashion world have rushed to pay tribute to a man who is credited with changing the way women dressed in the 20th Century.

'Yves Saint Laurent infused his label with his creative genius, elegant and refined personality,' said President Nicolas Sarkozy. 'He was convinced that beauty was a necessary luxury for all men and all women.'

Speaking on French radio, Pierre Berge, YSL's former business and personal partner, claimed: 'He was a libertarian, an anarchist and he threw bombs at the legs of society. That's how he transformed society and that's how he transformed women.'

Saint Laurent, a former head designer at Dior at the age of just 21, retired from designing in 2002 and had been ill for some years.

He will be sadly missed as he was unique & they don't make them like him anymore!

A great loss from a great Fashion designer, sorely missed from a French compatriot.
