Ellen and Portia to marry

Ellen DeGeneres and long-term girlfriend Portia De Rossi are set to marry, following the legalization of gay marriages in California.

Ellen made the announcement to her chat show audience during filming of Thursday's show after the California Supreme Court decision to drop the state's ban on gay marriage.

Girlfriend Portia was in the audience when Ellen's fans erupted in applause at the news and gave the loved-up pair a standing ovation.

Ellen said of the news: 'I can't wait to get married. We all deserve the same rights, and I believe that someday we'll look back on this and not allowing gays to marry will seem as absurd as not allowing women to vote.'
