ALL NEW: Marie Claire Makeovers Marie Claire beauty makeovers

SJP's £4.50 premiere dress

Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick at the Then She Found Me premiere Rex Features

Sarah Jessica Parker may be best known for her love of designer wares, but for a NY premiere last week she shunned a high price frock, and instead wore a dress from the US equivalent of Primark.

The pretty leaf print sundress costs just £4.50, and is part of SJP's Bitten fashion line at cut-price retailer Steve & Barry.

With all prices in store under $9 (£4.50), the prices are even cheaper than the UK's bargain clothing market.

But the shop vows that it does not use sweatshops, and instead keeps prices down by spending no money on advertising, opening stores in cheap areas, and keeping profits very small on all products.

Speaking to the New York Times at last week's premiere, the Sex and the City star explained why she chose the high-street, rather than high-end market, in which to design her own line.

'It seems like there is some justice in that, doesn’t it? For a lot of people - young women, middle-age women, regular women - there is this idea about wanting fashion in an affordable way. They are living in a less rarefied world.'

I have just bought the June issue of Marie Claire. You asked for comments on the eco-friendly bag, well, full marks. Much better than all that plastic that's usually wrapped around magazines (and everything else) these days. As usual the features were great reading and I now feel truly guilty for my wasteful lifestyle. But hey, hang on a minute. I recycle as much as I can, I buy organic meat and try to purchase vegetables that are grown in the UK. I always buy fairtrade bananas and use the eco wash on the machine. I turn lights and plug sockets off when not in use and re-use, rather than abuse, the plastic bags in the supermarket. When I list it like this, it sounds much more like I am doing my bit. However, the report may still come back, "could do better", yet I notice that if I want my wardrobe to be ecologically, ethically and environmentally friendly I have to have the bank balance of a Russian oligarch. And there's the rub. Many of those that can, rarely do, or do if it's a freebie for a photoshoot. Those of us who try to do our bit, always feel as if we should do more.
I will try to do more and I know many people, rich and poor, do their bit quietly and without fuss. It's great that famous faces will promote these issues, better still if big businesses and supermarkets get involved, but let's have some encouragement for the little guy and a mark for effort.

p.s. the body butter is gorgeous, thank you.
