Austrian father had sex assault conviction

Josef Fritzl, the Austrian man who kept his daughter captive and fathered a hidden incestuous family, had a previous conviction for sexual assault.

Fritzl has at least one other conviction as well for arson and he reportedly served time in jail in the late 1960s.

The revelations came as Austria was still reeling from the shock story of Fritzl's hidden daughter, who he abused for almost quarter of a century and her children.

Neighbours of the family described Mr F and his wife Rosemarie as upright citizens. 'They appeared normal, just like any other family,' said Guenter Prameiter, a baker on the same street.

The 73-year-old confessed to police yesterday that his had kept his daughter Elisabeth, 42, captive in a windowless basement ever since her disappearance in 1984. Mr F also owned up to fathering seven children with her, but denied rape.

Austrian police said yesterday that three of the children had 'never seen sunlight' until their release this weekend. The authorities described the discovery as 'one of Austria's all-time worst crimes', with Guenther Platter, the country's Interior Minister calling it 'unfathomable'.

Several neighbours of Mr F said that he was known as a former sex offender by older members of the community.

One 50-year-old neighbour said: 'I was 10 at the time, but I remember how we children were afraid to play near Mr F's house because of the rumours that he had raped a woman and spent some time in jail for it.'
