Primark set to overtake M&S as Britain's biggest store
PA Photos
Primark has risen to become Britain's second biggest selling clothes store, and is set to overtake M&S if it continues its rapid rate of growth.
A clear sign that the popularity of disposable fashion is showing no sign of waning, Primark yesterday announced a 25% rise in takings over the half-year period.
Already overtaking George at Asda, the store now boats a 10% share of the UK's clothing sales by volume, and is fast closing in on Marks and Spencer, which holds a 12% share. This means that £1 in every £10 spent on clothing in Britain is going into Primark's tills.
With the credit crunch taking its toll of the public's wallets, budget-clothing stores continue to see rising sales, with New Look, H&M and TK Maxx also seeing the benefit.

Being 19 most of my friends are students, and purchase all clothing they could need from Primark, even I have a few items from the store myself. But I often see my friends spend the same money that I do, but buying the same top in 5 different colours which will then wear thin after a few washes, and also I see countless strangers walking around in the same items which although is probably what they see to be fashion is not their individual style.
And where do items this cheap come from? Who are the workers, what are the conditions and what is their pay? If I buy a t-shirt for £3, when that price is divided by the cotton workers, designers, the factory workers, the shipping and transport, and Primark.. what is left for everyone else along the line?

Primark is a cheap shop i will agree, i suppose for girls who are still at school or just left, it is helpfull.I wud like to no though wot happend to "Quality over Quantity"?
I mean of course there Tills are doing so well, coz wen you buy a top or something that cheap, its only going to last a couple of washes and then your going to go need to buy something else.Clothes like from newlook used to be Quality, yes u had to spend a bit more, but they defiantely lasted alot longer than todays clothes. This is like buy something, wear it,wash it couple of time and then it needs disposing of,mm disposable fashion,,..People are ending up in the long term spending more becoz of this.

With such low prices there is potentially a high environmental cost for buying throw away fashion at such low prices.
