Another day, another mobile phone scare story - but is this one we should be taking seriously?

According to a new study, mobile phones have the potential to kill more people than smoking.

Dr Vini Khurana, an award-winning cancer expert, says not enough is being done to reduce the radiation given off my mobile phones and people should avoid using them wherever possible.

'We are currently experiencing a reactively unchecked and dangerous situation,' he tells the Independent, claiming, 'There is a significant and increasing body of evidence for a link between mobile phone usage and certain brain tumours.'

Because some cancers take up to ten years to develop, the professor concedes it may take some years before this is 'definitively proven', but warns that by then it may be too late to avoid 'an unchecked and dangerous situation'.

'It is anticipated that this danger has far broader public health ramifications than asbestos and smoking,' says Professor Khurana who points out that three billion people use mobile phones across the world, which is three times the number of people who smoke.
