Short-term stress warning
By Carla Bevan on Wednesday 12 March 2008
Another good reason to avoid getting stressed? Apparently it's ruining our memories.
While we all know working in stressful jobs or enduring stressful home lives for long periods of time can be damaging to our bodies, scientists now say even short-term stressful situations can be detrimental to our health.
The study claims that one-off stressful situations - a row with your boss, for instance - can damage our 'recall abilities'.
However, rather than let that little fact stress you out even further, the lead author of the report, Dr Tallie Baram, says his research is designed to help drug companies develop treatments for stress, rather than worry us further.
'Stress is a constant in our lives and cannot be avoided,' says Baram.
'Our findings can play an important role in the current development of drugs that might prevent these undesirable effects, and offer insights into why some people are forgetful or have difficulty retaining information during stressful situations.'
