Money worries keep nation awake

Over two-thirds of the population lie awake at night worrying about money, according to a new survey.

The nation is failing to get the recommended eight hours of sleep a night with over half of insomniacs naming financial worries as the biggest night-time fear.

Two-thirds of 25-35-year-olds admitted they felt stressed about general money worries. And the YouGov survey revealed a third of those questioned slept only six hours a night or less.

The biggest anxiety was the mounting cost of energy bills. Half of over-55-year-olds said they worried they couldn't afford to keep their homes warm. The five biggest energy providers have all significantly increased their tariffs since January.

The US National Sleep Foundation states seven to nine hours sleep is advisable for adults and explains: 'In the past century, we have reduced our average time in sleep. Though our society has changed, our brains and bodies have not. Sleep deprivation is affecting us all and we are paying the price.'
