Online fashion sees sales surge
Sales of fashion online has surged in the last two years, as shoppers move away from the high street, and onto their laptops.
A survey by Nielsen Media Research found that 97% of internet users in the UK use the web for shopping, with 36% buying clothing, showing an increase of 40%.
The research also revealed that the top web destination for clothing, and in fact all shopping on the internet, is eBay, with Next following as the biggest fashion etailer.
One of the areas to do best from the growth of online shopping is the high-end sites, and designer boutiques. My-Wardrobe.com announced a 143% increase in sales, and Net-a-Porter saw huge success this year when they made two Halston styles available the day after the show was presented in New York. A £775 Halton dress style became the fastest selling piece in the site's history, selling out in 45 minutes.
Commenting on her success, My-Wardrobe founder Sarah Curran told the Observer, 'It's convenience. There are brands that aren't easy to get hold of unless you live near a major city such as London or Leeds. They're not stocked in market town boutiques. We have huge orders out of the South West and Middle England.'
