Green TV network is success
The UK's first eco network, Green.tv, that promises naked cyclists and endangered lemurs, is fast becoming a hit.
The channel, which went live in 2006, is the first broadband channel devoted entirely to environmental films. It features seven channels covering air, land, water, climate change, people, species and technologies and shows films sourced from around the globe.
Everyone from community film-makers to non-governmental organisations has contributed to the channel, which also includes user-generated content. Each channel includes a feature, a news story and a children's film.
Ade Thomas, the managing director of Green.tv came up with the genius idea three years ago. 'It was a real eureka moment,' he admits. 'I've always been interested in broadcast journalism and passionate about environmental issues, and green.tv is a way of combining both those things.'
With the strapline 'Watch, Engage, Act', Thomas says that's exactly what his aim is. 'We want people to watch the films, engage with them and then use the internet to buy the right stuff and sign up the right things.'
Now the channel has backing from the United Nations Environment to be a partner to the channel, as well as Greenpeace International, MySpace and sponsorship from Ecover. They are also looking at establishing a base in California.
Thomas explains that convincing people that the population would watch films online was initially a challenge but now the channel's viewing figures stand at 800,000 page impressions and 220,000 unique visits a month.
