Gordon Brown plastic bag plea
Supermarkets will be given one year before they must start charging for plastic bags under plans by Prime Minister Gordon Brown.
The new green government levy will impose a 5p charge on all bags given away by supermarkets next year, if they fail to meet the terms.
The Prime Minister has backed the Daily Mail's Banish the Bags campaign and made a heartfelt plea to retailers to follow the example of Marks & Spencer by drawing a line under the 13 million free carrier bags currently distributed in the UK.
The bags, which end up in landfill sites, take an estimated 1,000 years to decay.
Mr Brown admitted that he was fallible himself revealing each week he and his wife Sarah are left with a 'binful of plastic bags' after their supermarket delivery.
Yesterday, Tesco and Sainsbury's confirmed they would be following Marks & Spencer's lead by drawing up plans to reduce the number of plastic bags they give away.

i dont agree about the charges 5p cos that wont put people off. i think 5p charge is too cheap.Should be charge 20p per bag or ban all plastic altogether then start using your own bags or use cardboard boxes like in the old days. In the 70s,my mum and my nan used cardboard boxes to put items in and take them home. Then use them again for next time.Simple.Or use a trolley, fillthe whole trolley with items and take them to your car and take the items out and put them in your car.Simple. We can live without plastic bags. Our planet should be plastic free so all kinds of creatures and our future grandchildren can enjoy long lives. We also need to start campaign to banned all plastic packinings.Meats and vegs always go sweaty in them. They stays fresh in paper bags in fridges. Why not start campaign to ban all plastic packinging now before too late?

"Mr Brown admitted that he was fallible himself revealing each week he and his wife Sarah are left with a 'binful of plastic bags' after their supermarket delivery."
Could Mr Brown explain why this is the case seeing as Tesco, ASDA and Sainsburys all run recycling schemes where you hand the bags BACK to them (regardless of which supermarket the bags were from) on your next delivery?
Although our last delivery from Tesco (I think) did not use bags for most of the delivery. This makes more sense as you are only taking the products from your doorstep to the kitchen anyway.
