Who's up for an Oscar?

George Clooney

The Coen brothers' film, No Country For Old Men, and epic There Will Be Blood lead this year's Academy Awards nominations with eight nods each.

Atonement, the film adaptation of Ian McEwan's novel, also came up trumps with seven nominations - one for best picture - however its stars, James McAvoy and Keira Knightley, were both passed over.

Cate Blanchett will be delighted with her two nominations in different films - playing Elizabeth I and Bob Dylan in the biopic I'm Not There. She is joined by other best actress nominees Julie Christie for her role as an Alzheimer's sufferer in Away From Her, Laura Linney in The Savages, newcomer Ellen Page for Juno and Marion Cotillard for her portrayal of singer Edith Piaf.

Brit Daniel Day-Lewis received a nod for his role in There Will Be Blood. He is joined in the best actor category by George Clooney, Tommy Lee Jones and Viggo Mortensen.

The youngest nominee is thirteen-year-old Saoirse Ronan who starred in Atonement and is joined by fellow Brit actress Tilda Swinton in the best supporting actress category.

The 80th ceremony is set to take place on 24 February, although there is still some doubt over what effect the US writers' strike will have on the event. Fingers crossed for a red carpet dress fest.

My best actress vote goes to newcomer Ellen Page. I saw her new film, Juno, this week and was blown away by her acting skills. She's only 20 years old and stunningly beautiful, but leaps and bounds ahead of her peers. The film comes out in the UK next month and I can't recommend it highly enough.
