Atonement tops Bafta nominations

Keira Knightley

Atonement is ahead of the field for this year's Bafta awards with a grand total of 14 nominations under its belt.

Both Keira Knightley and James McAvoy have been nominated for best actress and actor awards, whilst the film's director, Joe Wright, is also up for a gong.

The Coen brothers latest foray, No Country For Old Men and There Will Be Blood - which sees Daniel Day-Lewis return to the silver screen - have both been honoured with nine nominations each.

The red carpet now has star-studded potential with George Clooney sure to make an appearance after his nomination for his portrayal of the title role in Michael Clayton, whilst six nominations for The Bourne Ultimatum mean an appearance from Matt Damon is almost certain.

Cate Blanchett has received nominations for two films this year – for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth I in Elizabeth: The Golden Age and as Bob Dylan in I'm Not There.

With other film nominations including Sweeney Todd and Ridley Scott's American Gangster (Denzel Washington, Russell Crowe), hopes of a A-list turn are flying high.
