'I had a boob job in Prague'

Louise Rumak, 29, a PA from Kent, spent £2,500 on having her breasts enlarged from 32A to 32C in Prague last November. She kept the surgery a secret from her family and colleagues.

'I knew if I told my mother I was flying to Prague to have a breast enlargement, she would talk me out of it, so I kept it a secret. I wanted bigger breasts out of pure vanity, and I knew the op was cheaper abroad.

'I'd heard horror stories about cosmetic surgery in other countries, so I researched clinics on the internet. Instinct made me steer clear of two in Belgium and Spain. Beautiful Beings in Prague sounded more personable. I liked the way they picked you up from the airport and escorted you to an apartment stocked with bread, milk and tea. The cost was just £2,500 including flights, accommodation and surgery, compared with the £4,500
I'd been quoted in Britain.

'Still tentative, I read patient testimonies, talked to the consultant for two hours on the phone, and studied the surgeons' CVs. When I felt convinced, I booked a flight with a friend, Michelle. I told work colleagues and my family that I was going for a holiday.

'Prague was beautiful. We stayed in a massive apartment close to the centre, with two other British cosmetic surgery patients. The clinic was far cleaner than any British hospital I've visited, and staff spoke English.

'On the actual day of the operation, I was incredibly nervous. I suddenly felt far from home and I was certainly glad Michelle was with me. But it was all over in an hour and I stayed just one night in the clinic.

'The next night, Michelle and I ate out with the other women from the apartment. We talked about our surgeries – one had liposuction, the other a tummy tuck. We also did some more sightseeing and I had time to rest properly. At home, I know I would have been tempted to get on with things.

'After five days, I returned home, and my GP agreed to check the stitches for infections. Colleagues only noticed my breasts six weeks later when someone plucked up the courage to ask, but after the initial curiosity, people stopped mentioning it.

'It took me a week to tell my mother. At first she went quiet on the phone, but then she asked me all about it. When I saw her at Christmas, she was just relieved that I didn't look like Jordan.'
