Marie Antoinette's pearls to sell for an expected £400,000

Marie Claire news: Marie Antoinette\'s pearls

A set of pearls that belonged to Marie Antoinette is set to be sold in London this December, and is expected to sell for £400,000.

The stunning jewels feature quite a history, after being smuggled from France during the revolution by the Countess Lady Elizabeth of Sutherland, a friend of Marie Antoinette's. She was then due to return the pearls to the Queen Consort on her release from imprisonment, which of course never happened after Marie instead met her grisly end at the guillotine.

The pearls then continued their journey, and were mounted onto a necklace for the wedding of Lady Elizabeth's grandson's wedding. This necklace is what will be sold at Christie's, and has been described by the auctioneer's senior director of jewellery, Raymond Sancroft Baker as 'exceptionally rare.'
