Ombu

Ombu restaurant at Don Carlos Hotel, Marbella, Spain - Travel - Marie Claire

Fine dining under the stars in Spain

Where? Ombú, Don Carlos Leisure Resort & Spa, Carretera de Cádiz km 192, (29604) Marbella, Spain, ((+34) 952 76 88 00, www.hoteldoncarlos.com)

Om-what? Quite. As nonplussed as you, I did a little digging and discovered the restaurant was actually named after the huge tree which shelters its outdoor eating platform. For the green-fingered among you, it's actually a massive evergreen herb native to South America (thank you Wikipedia for that gem of info).

So, we're eating alfresco then? Is there any other way to eat in Spain? Low lit, seriously romantic and surrounded by tropical gardens, Ombú is fast gaining a reputation as one of Marbella's finest dining experiences.

Enough about the trees, what's the food like? Experimental and fabulous. Our tray of pre-appetizers included a test tube of flavoured carrot juice and only got more avant garde as the courses continued.

Test tubes of juice aren't going to fill me up Don't worry, there's no danger of going hungry here, with plenty of courses to graze over a long summer's evening and something quirky to match every palate.

Need to know? Ombú is open from 8pm to 11.30pm, throughout the year, booking is essential.
