Afternoon Tea at The May Fair Hotel
By Lucy Hutchings on Friday 12 June 2009
Where? The May Fair Hotel, Stratton Street, London W1J 8LT (020 7769 4041, www.themayfairhotel.co.uk)
Are we talking cucumber sandwiches and Earl Grey? Yes, all the traditional bits are present and correct – think plump scones, finger sandwiches and English breakfast brews – but The May Fair gives afternoon tea an ultra luxe make-over, with a selection of sweet and savoury treats, and a vast array of delicious teas.
A selection? There's no chance of going hungry, while the food may be dainty, there's plenty of it to go round. Think five different types of slim sandwiches, a tier of traditional scones, clotted cream and jam, plus an array of decadent patisseries, meringues and bite-size cakes.
What's your brew? Choose from the classics, or the array of exotic, organic, infusion and green teas. We opted for a refreshing blend of fresh mint.
Tea for two? Or three, or four, we could go on! A lovely way to catch-up with a friend, perfect for birthdays, or a quintessentially British treat for visitors to London. While many of the capital's afternoon tea venues can be quite formal, the May Fair is chic and contemporary. We lounged in a lavish booth for an ultimate decadent lazy afternoon.
How much? At just £15 each for the full tea, or £20 for a champagne tea, it's great value, and we guarantee you'll be overwhelmed by the multitude of treats!
