Mango Tree

Marie Claire Reviews: Mango Tree

Fabulous fine-dining - Thai-style

Where? 46 Grosvenor Place, Belgravia, London, SW1X 7EQ (0207 823 1888)

A posh Wagamama? No! It’s better than that (sorry, Wagamama, we still love you!), but that presumption wouldn’t do this little gem justice. A sleek, modern interior (cool cocktail bar and sumptuous cherry-red leather seats) combines with finishing touches sourced from Thailand to create an authentic, ambient atmosphere. As soon as my best friend and I walked in, we instantly felt relaxed, but assured that we were in for a real treat – and we weren’t wrong!

So, what’s cooking? The food here is true-to-its-roots, authentic Thai with a thoughtful, flavour-packed menu that’s bursting with fresh, zingy treats. We tickled our taste buds with some light-but-lovely starters (fresh prawns steamed in tom yum sauce served with chilli and garlic, £7.25, seared tuna salad with dry chilli and lemongrass, £6.80), followed by Pad Thai Gai, £12 - quite possibly the tastiest chicken Pad Thai ever – for me, and Pla Pow, £15.50 – sea bass fillet wrapped in banana leaves on a cress salad with spicy lime and tamarind – for Julie (the best mate).

Thirsty? Wash your food down with a drink from the extensive, hard-to-choose-from cocktail menu. Or, if you’re a fussy so-and-so who doesn’t like fruit (like me), ask them to make you a bespoke one. I sipped on a creamy dream that contained a Guylian Praline Chocolate Liqueur and it was, quite honestly, lip-smackingly delicious.

That all sounds great, but will your sweet tooth be satisfied? Absolutely! We couldn’t decide what to plump for so we threw caution – and our diets – to the wind, and had three! We oohed and aahed over steamed dark chocolate pudding with Cotswolds clotted cream, a chocolate brownie with chocolate and lemongrass ice cream, and honey mango served with coconut milk and sticky rice. The verdict? All scrumptious.

Overall thoughts? This was the perfect place for girlie cocktails combined with a to-die-for dinner. It would also, however, make a great setting for a romantic date with your beau. Upon leaving - very full and very happy - Julie and I couldn't think of a bad thing to say about it.
