THE TERRACE AT SANDERSON HOTEL

Marie Claire Restaurant review: Suka Restaurant at the Sanderson Hotel London

For Sex and the City-style cocktails al fresco, try the sophisticated Terrace at the Sanderson Hotel

Where? Terrace at Sanderson Hotel, 50 Berners Street, London, W1T 3NG (020 7300 5587, www.sandersonlondon.com)

Too swanky for ordinary folk? Not at all. This is an excuse to don a new pair of heels and dress up for sophisticated drinks on the town with the girls. An outdoor sanctuary in the capital is a rare thing, so drop all quibbles of the bad behaving British summer weather and trot down to this tranquil terrace where its new Malaysian restaurant, Suka, has just opened.

Will I clash with the ornate decor? There's no danger of that. Think luxury lounging at smart white marble tables, reclining on linen covered banquettes on a wooden decked terrace. As if that isn't calming enough the candle-lit water feature (and we're not talking Ground Force talents here) is mesmerising.

If I splash out on one cocktail? Make it the 'Frost Bite', Bison grass vodka and crème de cassis stirred with crushed blueberries, lemons and charged with champagne.

And to soak up the potent concoctions? Although not cheap (approx. £15 per dish), the Malaysian bar menu has a great mix of options to make sure you avoid an unwanted hangover. The steamed pork buns with braised pork belly were devoured and the veggie version – Vegetarian Bao – filled with Asian vegetables – were also a hit. We found the peanut and chilli sauces for the skewered dishes of beef and chicken tasted delicious and weren't too spicey.

Need to know? There is a new private area available behind glass windows just off the Terrace for secluded VIP tables and parties, so if you feel like splashing out for a birthday or engagement party, this section is ideal. Oh, and lest we forget - the most popular cocktail with the regulars? The Charred Chilli Martini. Taking inspiration from the Malaysian theme, ingredients include charred limes, fresh chilli and a dash of guava juice, all blended with Wyborowka Vodka. It's not for the faint-hearted but we challenge you to give it a try.
