THE KENSINGTON ARMS

The Kensington Arms

A new foodie destination for Bristolians

Where? The Kensington Arms, 35-37 Stanley Road, Redland, Bristol BS6 6N (0117 944 6444, www.thekensingtonarms.co.uk)

Mood? Having previously been a sports pub favoured by Bristol's football fans, the newly refurbished Kensington Arms couldn't be more different. Re-opened by Miles Johnson and Ian Rayner, who had already won the Best British Pub award for the Albion in Clifton, the Kensington Arms is now elegant and chic, with warm and inviting decor. The menu is small but varied with ingredients locally sourced where possible. The venue features some lovely touches, including an extensive wine list sourced by a local wine merchant ensuring a varied and unique selection tailored to the menu.

Why go? Formerly of Odette's and Le Manoir, head chef Simon Bradley has created a menu of classic British food mixed with contemporary European cookery. Combined with the abundance of local West Country fare, this makes for a menu of good-quality British fare.

To eat? A three-course dinner for two including wine costs about £50. Look out for their famed cod and chips, £11, and make sure you leave room for the tempting array of desserts which includes an impressive selection of British cheeses.

Need to know? We went on a Friday night, which was very busy, so if you're looking for a bit of conversation, make sure you book a table in the upstairs restaurant or you could end up having to shout.
