EAST BEACH CAFE
Where? East Beach, Littlehampton, West Sussex, BN17 5NZ (01903-731903, www.eastbeachcafe.co.uk)
Oh, we do like to be beside the seaside…
The south coast's answer to The Hamptons, the sleepy Sussex town of Littlehampton is taking the Bilbao route to revival with a landmark building.
What's all the fuss about?
East Beach Cafe is not your usual coastal caff: the building was designed by Thomas Heatherwick who created the flagship New York store for posh bag brand Longchamp.
Let me guess - it's one of those beach huts worth more than a three-bed semi?
Not quite: this place could have the blue-rinse brigade spluttering into their tea. With its rusted, undulating exterior, it looks like a piece of flotsam washed up on the beach. Outside seating for 80 also makes it one of the UK's best alfresco seaside spots.
Who's behind it?
Mother and daughter team Jane Wood and Sophie Murray, serving reasonably priced British food made from seasonal local ingredients.
Such as?
Potted crab (£5.50), fish and chips (£8.50), and roast chicken salad (£9). Afternoon tea is also served: think buttered crumpets with lemon curd (£4.50).
