Our favourite films of the Noughties revealed

Precious

Right. So we could tell you that Precious is the story of illiterate, overweight sixteen-year-old Claireece, whose life is the worst type of disaster zone. She’s pregnant for the second time by her absent father and abused by her awful mother (Mo’Nique). Or, I could tell you that it has Mariah Carey in it, and she’s got a moustache.

If you only check it out for the second reason, then so be it. Director Lee Daniels will still have you caught up in Claireece’s story, and by the end you'll be cheering because she has a charm it is hard to resist.

This adaptation of the novel Push by Sapphire is hotly tipped for success in awards season. It has already won the Sundance Film Festival Grand Prize.
