Top TV chef, writer, food consultant and MC Mentor Rachel Khoo on carving her career...

Most of us have spent an evening over a glass of wine debating an amazing business idea or carving out our dream career.

Our old MC mentor: Rachel Khoo, top chef and food consultant, knows a thing or two about this.

Rachel launched Paris's smallest restaurant in her 21sq m flat to rave reviews just years ago. She'd been babysitting and working in a department store to fund her passion for cuisine.

'I started my food career by quitting my job in fashion to move to Paris and study patisserie full-time,' the 32-year-old says. 'I did free work experience via a lot of door-knocking and pestering.

'I got in touch with food writer Marc Grossman, who was based in the city, and he gave me great advice about the best ways to get published as a writer.

'While working in an independent cookery bookshop, La Cocotte, I was given the opportunity to start giving classes there, and this was my big break.'

Khoo now has three books, as well as a BBC2 series - The Little Paris Kitchen - to her name.
