Abbie Skliarsky checks in to the Hamptons of the Cotswolds for a health retreat with a twist...
WHY GO? The Cotswolds is known (and loved) for its preposterously pretty countryside, peaceful atmosphere and cosy pubs complete with roaring fires and artisan fare. Whether it’s a long Sunday ramble, a sophisticated hen or just some time out from our hectic lifestyle – the Cotswolds ticks all the boxes. Better still, it’s only a 2-hour drive from London so it’s the perfect getaway away from the smoke.
WHAT? The ‘Wellness by the Lakes’ retreat that harmonises diet, mindfulness and wellbeing.
WHO WITH? There’s something for everyone: a nice mixture of families, groups and couples.
STAY AT: The Lakes by yoo, better known as the ‘Hamptons’ of the Cotswolds. With interiors designed by Kate Moss, Elle MacPherson and Jade Jagger it’s a chic update on the olde-worlde cottages you normally associate with the Cotswolds. It’s a 21st century escape that offers the ultimate in interiors envy and views to help you detox from anything stressful or negative. Prepare to feel 100% zen.
The site offers a full concierge service and luxurious spa featuring Spiezia therapies. Think of it as a switch-off from your 9-5 life: goodbye to your phone (if you wish), sugar spikes and that sluggish afternoon feeling.
Days start early with a smoothie using WelleCo’s Super Elixir followed by morning yoga on the terrace overlooking the lake or a mindfulness walk in the woods. You’ll receive a private consultation with a therapist who explores your specific needs and hopes = the ultimate experience that’s tailored to you. You’re always in good hands throughout the retreat; the Lakes by Yoo has collected the people at the top of their field to come and take care of you. There are physiotherapy sessions by the Bosworth Clinic who train GB Olympic athletes, strength training with a PT and mindfulness sessions with Amanda Barlow – a wellbeing wonder.
DINE AT: The retreat is headed up by plant-based foodie – and Instagram sensation – Bettina’s Kitchen. Every meal is prepared by Bettina Campolucci-Bordi and the dinners are interactive, which means you learn things to take back and implement in your busy life at home. Her approach to raw food is refreshing, inspiring and definitely encouraging. So much so that the detox programme still includes pancakes, hot chocolate and moreish desserts. You only have to look at Bettina once to be a plant-based convert. Her glow is infectious.
YOU REALLY MUST… Make the most of the outdoor activities. Aside from the retreat, you can fish, kayak, swim and zip-wire over the lake. It’s a case of whatever floats your boat – quite literally. All ages are catered for and that means smiles all round. Once you’ve been once you’ll soon realise it’s your home from home. Cue wanting to spend every weekend you can there…
