A buzzy atmosphere, reasonably priced food, a fabulous beer selection and brilliant service it's no surprise Brouge is packed to the rafters every weekend
Where? Brouge, 5 Hill Street, Richmond TW9 1SX (020 8332 0055, www.brouge.co.uk)
Isn’t that a place in Belgium? Well, yes, but also, as it turns out Twickenham and Richmond, too.
Belgium name, Belgian food? Oh, yes, bring on the beer, bread and mussels.
So wine’s off the menu? Actually no, we enjoyed a lovely glass of Rioja, but it’s rather missing the point to stick to the grape when there are literally hundreds of beers to choose from. We loved the cherry Belle-Vue Kriek and Liefmans Frambozen fruit varieties (you can tell it’s a girl writing this review, can’t you).
Anything to line the stomach first? We started with homemade bread and ‘Belgian Canapés’ (cheese, smoked sausage and mustards), then moved on to poached and smoked salmon terrine with lemon prawns. Quite frankly, we could have stopped there (Belgian bread’s quite filling as it turns out), but managed to find room for a generous portion of Moules Frites (available in a range of different sauces, we went for the Mediterranean red pepper and tomato option) and a portion of Stoemp, aka Belgian mash.
And a good time was had by all? Absolutely. The place was packed, a birthday party in full swing and a queue forming at the door as we left. We’ll definitely be returning.
Any cheap eats to be had? Drop by on a Tuesday for fish and chips and a glass of beer or wine for £11. Alternatively, get your order in by 7pm during the week (or 6pm at weekends) and you can get a two-course set menu with beer or wine for just £9.95.
Need to know? Brouge is open Monday to Thursday from 12pm until 11pm; on Friday and Saturday from 12 till midnight and on Sundays from12 until 11pm.
