Newlywed's shock on her wedding night
Newlywed Julie Boyde made a shocking discovery on her wedding night - she is allergic to her husband.
Julie, 26, and groom Mike, 27, had dated for two years but never discovered her extreme sensitivity to his sperm as they used condoms. However, when the couple ditched them for their first night as man and wife, Julie was left in agony.
She said: ‘Before marrying we were always very careful and used protection. That time we didn't. We figured we were married now, so if we got pregnant, we got pregnant. Pretty much right after, I knew something was not right because I was in a lot of pain. It was a scary moment.'
American Julie, of Ambridge, Pennsylvania, said of the excruciating discomfort: ‘On a scale of one to 10, it's close to 10.' The problem recurred whenever the couple made love, leaving doctors baffled.
The truth dawned when a friend suggested a possible allergy. Experts confirmed seminal plasma hypersensitivity, which affects up to 40,000 US women.
University of Cincinnati's Jonathan Bernstein explained: ‘They can have hives, soft tissue swelling and in severe situations can die.'
The condition ended the couple's hopes of having kids. Anti-allergy jabs failed and they object to IVF on religious grounds. Julie and Mike, married since 2005, hope to adopt.
