Hard to beet
By Cecily Bennett on Friday 28 November 2008
The humble beetroot is having a moment. Scientists at Barts and The London School of Medicine have discovered that beetroot juice can lower blood pressure just as significantly as conventional medicines. Rich in iron, folic acids and antioxidants, it also stores high levels of nitrates, which defend the body against hypertension. Further research has suggested that nitrates may also help the body fight and protect itself against other diseases, infections and stomach ulcers. Even better, plant these beauties in your garden and a crop can mature in as little as ten weeks. In the meantime, get your fix with Heartbeet Organic Beetroot juice, £1.49 for 250ml, from Holland and Barrett.
