A woman Cycling on the road in London

Q

My job is extremely stressful and, although I do find time to exercise, my extra weight never seems to shift - especially round the middle. Can stress prevent weight loss?
Danielle, London

A

Yes, it can. When you are stressed, your body thinks you are under attack, so it stimulates your adrenal glands to release adrenaline and cortisol. Cortisol encourages your liver to release glucose into the bloodstream. It also releases your fat stores, especially around the middle.
Sometimes, your body assumes the stress will continue and reprogrammes itself to get more fuel, so your appetite increases.

So what can you do? Exercise – it lowers stress because it reduces cortisol while increasing the 'happy' hormones, seratonin and dopamine. If you haven't got time to hit the gym, try brisk walking in your lunch break.
