Q
In recent months, I've become obsessed with tweaking my body with a few nip/tucks. What do I need to check out before going ahead?
Jenny, Manchester
A
There are five main questions you need to ask before having plastic surgery:
1) What are my reasons? Don’t have surgery to please someone else or if you’ve just experienced a life event, such as bereavement or divorce.
2) Is this the right surgeon? Contact the General Medical Council (GMC) to see if your surgeon is listed on the specialists register under a speciality that’s relevant to your procedure (0845 357 3456). The British Association of Aesthetic Plastic surgeons (BAAPS) can help you find a credited surgeon in your area (0207 405 2234).
3) Do I need to tell my GP? No, but the GMC recommends you do - they’ve got your health interests at heart, so should be informed.
4) Where will the surgery take place? Procedures like fillers can be done as outpatient treatments, nut anything surgical should be done in clinic or hospital. All cosmetic surgery companies must be registered with the Healthcare Commission. Ask to see their annual registration and read their inspection report under ‘You local health services’ on www.healthcarecommission.org.uk.
5) How long will recovery take? ‘It takes your body two weeks to recover from surgery. Give yourself four weeks to feel comfortable and have someone to help at home.’
