New Ways to Work Out

Tough, fun, with radical results guaranteed – these are the new fitness regimes everyone’s talking about

The 4 minute wonder

Shorter, higher-intensity workouts are America’s biggest fitness trend, and Tabata is the latest. ‘You
alternate eight 20-second bursts of
exercise – sprinting, light weights, bike – done at the highest level you can, with eight ten-second rest periods to make up four minutes,’ says fat-loss coach and nutritionist Drew Price.
Why it makes you super-fit ‘It works your body so hard, the metabolism gets a massive kick and it’s forced to remodel itself stronger and leaner,’ says Price, who warns that Tabata is only for people who are already fit. However, you can use its principles in a less extreme workout to drop weight fast. ‘Do any exercise – cycling,  treadmill or light weights – at 85 per cent
of your maximum effort, for 30
seconds,’ advises Price. Alternate with 30 seconds at a relaxed rate. ‘Repeat ten times, three to four times a week, and you’ll see results in eight weeks.’
£££ A session with Price costs £65 (drewprice.co.uk) or go to interval training.net/tabata.html.
