As fashion takes a more homespun feel for spring/summer '09, it looks like designers have plundered their local haberdasheries for inspiration, resulting in ribbons, lace and all manner of sweet embellishments on the catwalks.

The most popular embellishment of all? A little (or a lot) of fringing. Spotted everywhere from Louis Vuitton and Alberta Ferretti to Alessandro Dell'Acqua and Jil Sander, fringing can be folksy, modern, sexy or romantic – or all four at once!
