There is no easier way to update your wardrobe this spring than with a new jacket

We keep getting tempted with a glimpse of the sun here and there, but let's be honest, we do live in blustery England not balmy Brazil so we do need a jacket of sorts. With that in mind it's time to bin the biker and embrace the bomber jacket for a sure fire way to tick off the trends this season.

Yes, they may have been the staple of fighter pilots in WW1 but no longer is the material insulating and with that fetching orange lining. Bomber jackets are having a makeover.

Whether it's a bold oriental print as seen at Emilio Pucci, hi shine metallics at Jonathan Saunders or sporty mesh details at Stella Mccartney, bombers were the only cover up to be seen in on and off the catwalk at the spring/summer shows.

Last summer we saw Prada's spring/summer '12 collection, a high fashion take inspired by American hot rod cars, featuring pink satin bombers with crystal embellishment. Of course, where Miuccia Prada goes others follow and here you have it, a year later they are everywhere! Growing up with a Grease obsession (who didn’t want to be in the Pink Ladies?) I'm all for the bomber revival, but how to wear them in a modern way?

This season the silhouette is very much slouchy and laidback, wear them finishing on the hip rather than the cropped waist version for the most flattering take. They can take on a boxy oversized feel so keep your silhouette snug and skinny on the bottom half, think teaming it with skinny cropped trousers rather than a wide leg palazzo pant for a long and lean silhouette.

The snug feeling of the elastic detail on your neck takes a little getting used to but this collarless shape detail is what sets it apart from other jackets. With the bomber jacket comes pockets, a winning combination, I'd say. You can actually fit all your essentials in those bad boys!

The perfect smart casual cover up, wear it now layered over a roll neck with denim dungarees. For a unexpected evening look wear draped over your shoulders with a strapless cocktail gown. In the office team it with a pencil skirt, layered over a shirt for a positively chic look. At the weekend they come into their own, making a perfect addition to any casual Saturday outfit. Finally, play down a girly sundress and add one for a boyish twist.
