Basso & Brooke
By Carla Bevan on Wednesday 13 February 2008
Collections inspired by architecture can be somewhat bewildering to audiences more used to artistic references from paintings or novels, however, Basso & Brooke's 'urban cityscape' collection was as relevant and accessible as the best of this week's shows.
On clothes that played with conventional proportions of volume and shape, reflections of London's Gerkin were printed on coats and bags, while Birmingham's Bullring was brought to the catwalk via huge Stephen Jones-designed hats and quirky cocktail dresses.
Exaggerated puffs, sharp angles and fractured layers were broken across outfits and yet, despite the avant garde nature of it all, it was all as covetable and exciting as we've come to expect from the design duo.
Eclectic, unusual and totally unique, this was a show that stayed with you long after the models had left the catwalk.
