Paul Smith
By Carla Bevan on Wednesday 13 February 2008
The doors of the Claridge's ballroom had to be practically wedged close to contain the crowds that squeezed themselves in to see Paul Smith's new winter collection. There might be plenty of new blood on the London schedule this season, but Smith remains a must-see ticket.
The resulting show was worth the crush: to the strains of Tainted Love, the designer sent his models down the catwalk sporting a collection that was infused with his particular British sense of style.
Clothes had a slouchy, masculine edge, but were still tailored to fit and while the palette was predominantly dark, flashes of colour on the inside of a leather glove or on the cuff of a jacket kept things interesting.
There was a pubic-school vibe with oversized grey sweaters worn as jumper dresses, leather satchels hung over the shoulder and blazers thrown on over pretty frocks.
Meanwhile, for the grown-ups, silk headscarves and stiff, rose-print skirts contrasted with the rebellious sexy, smoky eye make-up on display and sultry messy hairdos.
