Aquascutum

Marie Claire Fashion: London Fashion Week catwalk report, Aquascutum Mitchell Sams

At 187 years old, Aquascutum has lived, and dressed over a century of British history.

From their invention of the trench coat in 1914, to their favour with the British royal family, politicians and public figures, it has established and maintained a prominent position amongst classic English style.

Fast forward to autumn/winter 2008 and designers Michael Herz and Graeme Fidler took inspiration from this rich archive to create a collection that both looked back, and to the future of the label’s style.

The coat- whether trench, military or rain- has always been central to the brand. As a result, 22 were sent down the catwalk, all buttoned, zipped, or belted to conceal the outfit beneath. In a variety of colours and shapes, no one theme connected each style, albeit for the heritage from which they were conceived.

Onto the second half of the show, and the coats were removed to reveal their complimenting outfits. Neat pencil skirts and billowing tops, in varying shades of orange, pink and green fitted well with the slim military belted coats, while voluminous swing jackets were opened to show full circle skirts, or tulip shaped dresses.

A collection that may have looked to the past, but proved Aquascutum has much to offer to Britain’s fashionistas in the future.
