John Rocha
Mitchell Sams
John Rocha once said a woman's wardrobe should never be without his favourite colour: black. And boy did he make this style mantra clear in his autumn/winter 2008 collection.
Black dominated the catwalk in Rocha-typical simple, plain, fluid shapes (you could happily compile your entire work wardrobe from this collection) from a mini shift dress, to slim-cut three-quarter length trousers and jackets in all shapes and sizes (cap-sleeved with pepleum, cap-sleeved without, androgynous power suit, cute and cropped - the list is endless).
When colour made a guest appearance, it was block and bold: a burnt orange A-line skirt and a bubblegum-pink skirt suit helped to create the 'quirky feminity' he was aiming for.
As ever, he used touch-me, tactile fabrics like cashmere (a long-standing favourite), lamb's wool and delicate silk crepe de chine. And, when attention was turned to eveningwear, John's fascination with surfaces and textures really shone through, with hand-crocheted dresses, sequin panelling and metallic embroidery creating a buzz.
Overall, John, once again, managed to create a collection full of well-tailored, wearable pieces, with modern structures (voluminous bell shapes) and high-impact flashes of colour giving a nod to today's funky working woman.
