Alice Temperley
By Carla Bevan on Thursday 7 February 2008
Good-bye boho, au revoir pretty prints and lacy hems, Alice Temperley has a new direction for her much-loved label, and it's seriously racy.
Although apparently inspired by Mata Hari, the clothes weren't exactly turn-of-the-century stuff.
Thigh-high boots were held up with suspender belts, towering silver stiletto heels supported black patent ankle boots and sheer gowns were ripped all the way to the waist.
Of course it wouldn't be Temperely without a few beautiful dresses. For next season, these came with gem-studded bodices and ruffled skirts or Sixties-style with short hemlines and long sleeves (a key emerging trend in New York this week).
There was also a memorable metallic emerald evening dress, which can only have been inspired by Keira Knightley's recent turn in Atonement.
Despite these luxurious lines, however, overall the collection was far edgier than we've come to expect from Temperley. Will her loyal fans take to the military jackets and leather pencil skirts? Let's wait and see.
Saturday morning at Portobello Market might never look the same again.
