Last season, Matthew Williamson had Prince perform at his show, which became such a talking point everyone rather forgot to write about the clothes.

This season, he was taking no such chances. The only guests with vocal abilities – Will Young and Rhianna – stayed firmly in their front-row seats and we could all concentrate on the clothes instead.

In true Williamson style, the collection was an uplifting mix of bright colours and sparkling accents.

Fur was used with wanton abandonment, along with cashmere, silk and rainbow tweeds.

Prints – and it wouldn't be a Matthew Williamson show without them – came in the form of red roses, broken into geometric squares, or hazy ferns scattered over graphic lines.

Like many others this season, Matthew was sponsored by Falke, who are fast becoming the Swarovski of the hosiery world with their generous supply of tights to all the top shows.

The gesture is paying off: grey ribbed tights look set to become the ultimate easy-to-copy accessory next season, thanks to so many designers making them such an integral part of their collections.

Williamson was no exception, showing them off to their best advantage with high snakeskin show boots and even higher hemlines.

Other must-haves for Williamson fans, however, might not be so easy to mimic on the high street: luxe metallic parkers, mohair coats and appliquéd silk georgette, for instance.

And who needs Prince when you have such flair.
