Marie Claire Fashion: Preen A/W 2008, New York Fashion Week

The design duo behind Preen, Thea Bregazzi and Justin Thornton, took American inspiration to the extreme for their autumn/winter 2008 collection this weekend in New York, making Kurt Cobain's grunge look and Eighties movie 9 ½ Weeks their muses. What's the common ground? Men's dressing gowns, of course.

Nirvana's frontman was partial to a dressing gown on stage, whilst Kim Basinger sported her lover's oversized coat throughout the movie.

Cue swathes of plaid in cocoon jackets, shirtdresses nipped in with narrow belts and teamed with slimline, Biggles-style jackets, all staying true to Preen's laid-back cool style.

A hint of Eighties Manhattan revealed silvery satin jumpsuits and less-flattering spangly electric-blue trousers but the Brit double act has firmly made their mark Stateside, taking over from where Stella McCartney left off: with a nonchalant, sexy collection
