Diane von Furstenberg
By Lucy Hutchings on Monday 4 February 2008
Diane von Furstenberg may be famed for her universally flattering wrap dresses, but with her autumn/winter 2008 collection she proved that there is much more to her designs than simply fab frocks.
Channelling Forties glamour, the designer dubbed her collection a 'Foreign Affair', based on the travels of her imaginary heroine through Berlin, Shanghai, and Manhattan.
This Marlene Dietrich-inspired style created a look that mixed elements of sportswear with soft feminine layers. Chiffon dresses were teamed with neat blazers, or twin sets belted to create an hourglass silhouette. Of course the eponymous wrap dress returned, this season in fuschia pink, but in keeping with the retro context, it was worn with a knitted vest and skinny belt.
Where the dress has ruled in previous seasons, for autumn/winter von Furstenberg made separates her stars. Full-legged trousers were worthy of Dietrich, and printed swishy A-line skirts were balanced by trim cardigans.
For evening we moved to a more Twenties vibe, where flapper dresses were beaded and sequinned.
A chic wearable collection and from von Furstenberg, we would expect nothing less.
