Marie Claire fashion: Elie saab Couture S/S 2008 - catwalk report

Diamonds might be a girl's best friend, but they also get on pretty well with Elie Saab, and this season, the relationship's shifted up a gear.

The red-carpet favourite's Spring/Summer couture collection was ablaze with dazzling gems, glittering crystals and sparkling accessories making this the one runway show when sunglasses on the front row weren't just acceptable, but practically a requirement.

If that all sounds a little Strictly Come Dancing for you, it really wasn't (although I bet Tess Daly would sell her mother for one of these babies).

The dresses, instead, were cut with a modern, slinky twist, with sleek, refined lines to offset the ornate detailing.

Strapless, full-length gowns made up the bulk of the collection, although it was the handful of more subtle, low V-neck dresses that really stood out – with their subtle retro references to decades gone past.

In fine couture tradition, the final piece was an extravagant bridal gown covered in, yes, you guessed it, more crystals. Still, if a millionairess can't sparkle on her wedding day, when can she?
