Givenchy Couture
By Carla Bevan on Wednesday 23 January 2008
There was something inspiringly confident about Riccardo Tisci's latest 'Gothic Ballerina' couture collection for Givenchy.
An arrangement of contrasts, the show featured outfits that were a melange of juxtaposing features: white ballet tights and tutus with elbow-length black leather gloves; oversized pieces created entirely of Elizabethan-style ruffs over tight, high-waisted trousers; stiff high-necked shirts with racy leather pants; equestrian themes mixed up with a little Victoriana.
And somehow it all just worked. Even the outlandish 'wedding' dresses with their see-through skirts and puffball feathers, or a bright tomato red dress with matching tights and heels, were strangely covetable.
The best though and most conventionally wearable, although still not your average Saturday-night garb was a series of architecturally sculptured white outfits, including a wonderfully avant-garde cocktail dress.
Cutting-edge couture? Exactly.
